Dr. Chipty will participate in a panel discussion on the Ninth Circuit’s recent decision in the NFL Sunday Ticket Litigation. Thirty five years after the Supreme Court’s decision in NCAA v. Board of Regents, the NFL Sunday Ticket decision has reignited a fundamental debate about the nature and scope of competitor collaborations, particularly among sports teams. Dr. Chipty will provide her assessment of the appropriate economic framework to address key issues at the heart of the Ninth Circuit’s opinion, and the panel will debate the merits of the case and what the decision bodes for competitor collaborations.

Dr. Chipty will participate in the Federal Trade Commission’s hearings on Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century, focused on the potential for collusive, exclusionary, and predatory conduct in multi-sided, technology-based platform industries. Her panel, which will be held on the first of the three-day event, will debate issues related to defining markets and establishing market power in cases involving multi-sided platforms.

Dr. Chan will participate in a panel discussion on minimum advertised price policies and other resale issues.  She and others will discuss their views on the legal and economic issues related to minimum advertised pricing policies, including legal risk, enforcement issues, and setting realistic outcomes. The panel will also discuss other best practices and risks in establishing pricing and distribution policies.

Dr. Chipty participates in a panel discussion on market definition in section 2 and section 7 cases.  She and others discuss their views on whether one can use the same test (e.g., the hypothetical monopolist test) for market definition in a monopolization case as in a merger case, whether market definition is a question of law or fact, and whether the use of a specific tool to define markets should be subject to review on appeal as a question of law or fact?”

Dr. Chipty worked with staff of the Health Policy Commission to understand the determinants of price variation across Massachusetts inpatient hospitals. The results of this analysis were presented in the 2017 Academy Health Annual Research Conference. The poster summarizing this work is titled, Factors Underlying Variation in Inpatient Hospital Prices.
